Tasted by experts, Steeltown Welsh Dry Gin from Spirit of Wales Distillery is awarded a Great Taste star in 2022.
Newport, South Wales, United Kingdom, 5 August 2022 – Spirit of Wales produces hand-crafted commemorative Welsh spirits. With recipes inspired by the landscapes of Wales, the distillery created Steeltown Welsh Dry Gin as a tip of the hat to the Welsh coastline and summer holidays. Only two years in existence, the Newport distillery has been named among the top global food and drink producers, picking up a highly prized 1-star Great Taste award for Steeltown Dry Gin.
More than 14,000 products were put through the competition’s rigorous blind judging process at the world’s most coveted food and drink awards. 4,078 products were awarded a Great Taste 1-star – ‘food and drink that delivers fantastic flavour’, 1,237 were awarded a Great Taste 2-star – ‘above and beyond delicious, and 241 were awarded a Great Taste 3-star – ‘extraordinarily tasty food and drink’.
Steeltown Welsh Dry Gin was rated for delivering fantastic flavour, and was a big hit with the judges who commented, “Some saline and icing sugar notes on the nose and plenty of spiciness; the palate delivers a sweet and minty freshness. We enjoyed the gin mixed with tonic, as it delivered a very balanced, warm drink with plenty of orange flavours and the alcohol well-carried.” The Great Taste judges added, “It’s an unusual and pleasing minty-fresh drink, with an interesting and clever evolution with tonic.”
Made in a Dragon Steel Still named Laura, Steeltown Gin is packed with botanicals. Inspired by Miner’s Fortnight and Welsh summer holidays and the great taste of lemonade, sorbet, and a stick of rock from a traditional seaside holiday. The Welsh Gin was one of 5,556 products to receive a Great Taste award in 2022 (which is only 39.1% of the total products entered).
When asked about the recent win from Great Taste and The Guild of Fine Food, James Gibbons, Head Distiller from Spirit of Wales, commented, “It’s brilliant to receive a fantastic result from the team at the Great Taste awards, after our first submission to the competition. What is Great Taste?
Recognised as a stamp of excellence and actively sought out by food lovers and retailers alike, Great Taste, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, values taste above all else. All products in the line-up for judging are blind-tasted: every product is removed from its packaging so it cannot be identified before entering a robust, layered judging process. This year, the judging took place over 90 days across two judging locations (Dorset and London) with a panel of over 500 judges. This year’s line-up saw food and drink products submitted from a staggering 110 different countries across the world.
