I am extremely honoured to be running the Testimonial Year in tribute to one of the world’s greatest ever rugby internationals. Not only is Martyn a legend on the field, but he is also one of game’s gentlemen and it has been a privilege to get to know him over the past couple of years.
If any player deserves a Testimonial with a difference, then it is Martyn Williams. In his true selfless style, he asked us to ensure that his Testimonial Year celebrated Wales and rugby as a whole. Being the modest person that he is, I think Martyn wanted to deflect some of the attention away from himself!
The concept of the “Spirit of Wales” Testimonial was born. Our aim is to leave a lasting memory with those that attend our events. We want our events to be as classy as the player himself. In addition to celebrating Martyn’s great career, this Testimonial will be about celebrating Welsh achievement in general. I see Martyn as the ideal ambassador for the Spirit of Wales concept. Martyn epitomises everything that is good about traditional Welsh spirit. A never-say-die attitude when the chips are down, honest and hard graft and, despite his legendary status, a modesty you cannot help but admire.
Only Martyn could secure such a fantastic list of Spirit of Wales Patrons to endorse this Testimonial. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our seven magnificent Patrons, Ian Woosnam (Sport), Ioan Gruffudd (Entertainment), James Dean Bradfield (Music), Bryn Williams (Food), Kim Howells MP (Polictics) Rhian Ap Gruffydd (Arts & Culture) and Peter Thomas (Business) for their wonderful support.
