About Martyn

Martyn was born on 1st September 1975 in Pontypridd. He began his career playing for his home town, and thereafter moved to Cardiff RFC in 1999. He made his first senior Wales debut against the Barbarians in 1996.

Martyn announced his retirement from international rugby following Wales’ premature exit from the 2007 world Cup, however when Warren Gatland was appointed as the new Wales Team Manager he was coaxed back into the international scene and went on to play an integral role in Wales’ 2008 Grand Slam victory.

He is one of the most decorated and successful British players of all time winning, to date, 91 caps for Wales, two Grand Slams and two Triple Crowns. As well as captaining Wales, he has represented his country at three World Cups and hopes to make a fourth in 2011.

In 2005 Martyn received one of the highest accolades for a Northern Hemisphere player when he was voted Player of the Tournament for the 6 Nations.

He has been selected for the British & Irish Lions for a remarkable three consecutive tours Australia (2001), New Zealand (2005) and South Africa (2009).

He holds the Welsh record for the most appearances in the 5/6 Nations Championship, surpassing the great Gareth Edwards in 2009.

Martyn is widely regarded by many commentators as one of the best openside flankers in the world, and the man fondly known as “Nugget” is one of the most well-loved and respected rugby players of all time.
